The relationship between art and mathematics has interested intellectuals since the time of Ancient Greece. Although today, much can be understood in terms of science, the connection remains largely a unsolved mystery. It has been the subject of many scientific theories and experiments whilst causing a stir of speculation. The Golden Section is just one of the known mathematical formulae which appear to exceed all cultures of the world and across many disciplines.
I have chosen this subject as the focus of my work because of it’s connection and influence in with the natural world and with design. Whilst design is steeped in culture and history, mathematics is universal. It is a pure language of numbers and formulae which can be understood anywhere in the world. Design is the binary opposite. It exists within culture and within a specific society. Taken out of it’s intended location, it becomes meaningless and misunderstood. Mathematics is logic with answers, design is creativity and individual interpretation. I am interested in the mergence of these two seemingly disconnected topics and how the result can end with beauty. I am also interested in the combination of logic and creativity and the balance betweenrules and individuality.
A summary of the research was displayed in a book; the most important ideas, people and theories connected to the topic. It had a mixture of text pages, images and diagrams.
